Beautiful Nebraska, peaceful
prairieland,
Laced with many rivers, and the hills of sand;
Dark green valleys cradled in the earth,
Rain and sunshine bring abundant birth.
Beautiful Nebraska, as you look
around,
You will find a rainbow reaching to the ground;
All these wonders by the Master's hand;
Beautiful Nebraska land.
We are so proud of this state where
we live,
There is no place that has so much to give.
Beautiful Nebraska, as you look
around,
You will find a rainbow reaching to the ground;
All these wonders by the Master's hand,
Beautiful Nebraska land.

Beautiful Nebraska
Music by: Jim Fras The Nebraska State Song
Words by: Jim Fras and Guy G. Miller
**As written on the Nebraska
Secretary of State web site
Jim Fras, a Russian refugee who came to Lincoln Nebraska in 1952, composed
“Beautiful Nebraska” in 1960. As Fras tells it, “I was lying in a pasture and
words just came to me… Beautiful Nebraska, peaceful prairie land. Laced
with many rivers and the hills of
sand.” It took him only one hour to finish the song, but it took seven years of
campaigning to get the Nebraska Legislature to designate the song as the
Nebraska state song.
State senators extensively debated the selection of a state song through several
legislative sessions. Many songs were submitted during the selection process. In
1967, Senators Richard Marvel, Jerome Warner, Harold Simpson and Eric Rasmussen
proposed LB 535, which designated “Beautiful Nebraska” as the state song.
The
bill was passed on a vote of 31-4, and Governor Norbert Tiemann signed it into
law on June 21, 1967.
